On its own, your IP address doesn’t give someone direct access to your computer, but it can still be used in ways that might affect your privacy or security.
Here’s what someone can do with it:
Approximate location tracking
An IP address can usually reveal the city or region you’re in, sometimes down to your neighborhood if you’re on a home connection. It’s not pinpoint GPS, but it can be accurate enough for targeted ads or profiling.
Identify your internet provider
Your IP shows which ISP you’re using, which can be a starting point for scams that pretend to be from that company.
Link your online activity
If someone sees the same IP address across different websites or services, they can connect those activities to the same user.
Launch certain network attacks
In rare cases, attackers can try denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to overload your connection, or probe for insecure devices on your network if you haven’t secured them. This is more common in online gaming disputes or targeted harassment.
